Urban Greening Benefits

Improving the natural environment we all share is a cornerstone of building community. The Center’s water-conserving irrigation system reuses rainwater to support the fl ora and fauna that will surround the building and blossom in the botanical garden.

Visitors, passersby, and area residents alike will reap the benefi ts of enhanced natural beauty, increased tree canopy, improved air quality, and conscientious conservation practices.

An Urban Oasis

Harmony Courtyard is an “urban oasis”—an enchanting escape from the busy streets of downtown Sacramento. An extension of the Center, the courtyard stretches from the N Street sidewalk toward the north end of the building.

With its lush botanical garden, innovative urban greening features, and community-building design, the courtyard will enrich each visitor’s experience.

Urban Cascade Wall

Enhancing the ambiance will be an aquatic wonder—a cascading water fall streaming down a transparent wall. This alluring feature will give passersby a window into the courtyard’s botanical garden and activities.

Botanical Garden

An eclectic mix of plant species—from shady trees and colorful fl owers to fruit-bearing vines and decorative grasses and shrubs—will fl ourish in the Courtyard’s botanical garden and create an urban habitat for song birds and butterflies.

Living Wall

The exterior of the Center building facing the courtyard will come to life as it is transformed into a living wall—an organic mural of vibrant flowers and vines.

A vanguard urban greening technique, living wall systems use plant life to beautify buildings, reduce facility heating and cooling requirements, recycle storm water, and enhance biodiversity.

Events and Educational Programs

With the capacity to accommodate up to 150 people, Harmony Courtyard will be a spectacular outdoor venue for program activities, art exhibitions, cultural celebrations, and special events.

The middle of the Courtyard forms a circle, a central space designed to facilitate group activity and interaction.

The green habitat provides a fruitful opportunity to teach visitors about the environmental assets and features of the botanical garden as well as develop program content that integrates social, diversity, and environmental issues.
