The Capital Unity Council (CUC) is a nonprofit 501(c)(3) formed in 1999 in response to a series of hate crimes in the Sacramento region dating back to 1993. The policies and priorities of CUC are directed by a diverse and committed Board of Directors with the goal of developing educational programs, responding to acts of hate and bias and building a Unity Center to present the history of diversity of California.

The Council's founders felt that the most positive ways to do this would be to create programs and activities that promote respect and appreciation for all people.

The CUC embraces inclusion, equality and the celebration of differences. We believe that America's strength and purpose derive from its multicultural and multi-dimensional population - and that the minds and hearts of those who fear and despise diversity need to be better understood before they can be changed.

Capital Unity Council's approach to issues of intolerance is one of prevention more than reaction. Our principal assets include our access to leadership, an abiding commitment to social justice and our capability to serve as a reliable referral source in the resolution of conflicts and support for victims of hate.

We believe in the possibility of a future in which people can not only live together but also appreciate and learn from each other's differences. And we believe that future is already upon us.
